Captain Scarlett – Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Review

After my old Edirol Audio Interface died, I searched around online for a suitable replacement and the name that kept coming up again and again was the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. There was a plentiful supply on eBay, so it did not take long to pick up a second generation Scarlett 2i2 at a reasonable price.

Overview

The Scarlett 2i2 is a popular USB audio interface that offers studio-quality sound for recording, songwriting, streaming and podcasting. It has two mic/instrument inputs, two balanced outputs, and a headphone output. It also comes with a software bundle that includes Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools Artist, and various plugins and samples.

Features and Specs

The Scarlett 2i2 is a compact and lightweight device that connects to your computer via USB-C. It has two inputs that can handle both microphones and instruments, with switchable 48V phantom power and Air mode (introduced on the 3rd Generation). Air mode is a feature that emulates the sound of Focusrite’s ISA mic preamps, adding brightness and clarity to your vocals and acoustic instruments. The inputs also have gain knobs with LED halos that indicate the optimal level and warn you of clipping.

The Scarlett 2i2 has two balanced outputs that you can connect to your studio monitors or speakers, and a headphone output with a dedicated volume knob. It also has a Direct Monitor switch that lets you hear what you are recording without any latency. The device supports up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution, which means you can capture every detail of your sound with high fidelity.

Performance and Sound Quality

I have been using the Scarlett 2i2 for a few months now, and I am very impressed by its performance and sound quality. It is very easy to set up and use, and it works flawlessly with my Mac and Windows computers. I have recorded various guitar and keyboards, with the Scarlett 2i2, and the results are always clear, crisp, and balanced.

The 2nd Gen has USB-B on the rear alongside the 6.35mm outputs., with the 3rd gen it moves to USB-C

Focusrite Scarlett Family

The 2i2 is just one of the larger Focusrite family which have increasing numbers of interfaces and features.
