Behringer TD-3-MO Review

The Behringer TD-3-MO (or Modded Out) is an upgraded version of its TD-3 which itself is a copy of Rolands iconic TB-303 Bass line synthesizer. This time Behringer are copying the Devilfish modifications that expanded the capabilities of the 303.

Compared to the TD-3 I prefer the build and physical dimensions of this upgrade – it feels a bit more premium, although its still plasticy. Although its is a different form factor is has roughly the same dimensions as the Crave, Edge, Grind and spice, and so can fit into a stand with them.

New Noise

The TD-3-MO has a wider cutoff range and more bass, and its nice that you don’t get a drop in volume as you increase resonance. Both the amplitude and filter have separate decay. There is now an overdrive and muffler (VCA soft clipping) so a wider variety of crunch cna be achieved, and the filter can self-ocillate independently. I enjoyed the new Sub-Oscillator for more low end, you can also chose to drop down 1 or 2 octaves with it. With dedicated controls for filter tracking and filter FM, there is more granular control than the OG.

Patching up

Behringer Crave, Edge and TD-3-MO together

If you have a Semi-modular setup, such the other Behringers, there are opportunities to make some interesting patches between them, as well as the standard MIDI connections on the back

No FX

There is however no FX added to the unit, so I always find as with most of my DAWless synths, a little reverb and delay goes a long way to improving the sound ot my ears.
