Hope Breaks is the new album released this week by The Data Lakes. Some folks use DAWless to make entire albums, and in the past, I made a few EPs Treading Water and One Up that were about 90% DAWless. This collection of tunes though were mostly produced within Ableton, however there are a few exceptions. The track Perfcet was built from a Keystep Pro Arpeggiator fed into the Novation Circuit Tracks as the sound source and also introduced a distorition pedal. Towards the end I added a sub bass in Ableton. I quite like this approach of starting something with DAWless, saving the raw wav file and later embelishing the result with other instruments. In addition the close out noise ambience of Angles Mort was also mostly created with DAWless and later I post processed with extra FX inside the DAW.
In the past I have alternated between DAWless and in the box productions so it could well be the next EP or album I release will be without using a DAW, but I am not gatekeeping about it. I like using the DAW sometimes, DAWless other times when I want a break from the computer and then ususally the best results for me come from a hybrid approach, the precision of the computer arranged music combined with the raw analogue synths and drum machines can sometimes make the most interesting combination.
